In the Author’s Head: The Spider Behind “Something Familiar”

The Spider Behind “Something Familiar”

Leandra Ranger

In “Something Familiar,” Diana’s familiar, Ar, is an orchard orb-weaver (Leucauge venusta), which is native throughout the eastern United States and Canada.  Though they are not venomous, many members have orange or red marks on their underbellies that resemble a black widow’s.

I chose a spider for Diana’s familiar as I love finding the magic in what is considered ordinary or even undesirable (and ordinary magic is a theme of The Witching Journals).  However, this did limit the length of writing and research sessions for this story as I am mildly arachnophobic!  Ironically, an orb-weaver made it’s home outside my window shortly after I wrote this story.  I guess life imitates art after all.
